Museo Nacional De Historia – Mexico City

There are two interesting Huarache designs on display at the Museo Nacional de Historia, both belong to the Museo Nacional de Anthropologia, are dated XX, or 20th century and close relatives to the ‘Pata de Gallo’ Huarache.
One is Zapotec.

The other Otomi.

I just made a pair like the Zapotec. The little triangular piece in front and the piece around the heel make the sandal fit a lot better than without. You can just slip them on and off, they don’t have to be very tight to feel secure and it looks pretty good, too. My understanding is the laces are so long because they break eventually and the extra can just be pulled through the holes and retied. The little pieces hold all that extra lacing out of the way.
