úkata is proud to offer their first Huaraches for sale.
The “Cien Clavos” Huaraches are made by José Martínez from the small town of Mazamitla, nestled in the pine covered hills of the Sierra Tigre in Southern Jalisco. José Martínez is continuing in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, making the same traditional Huarache designs. A true craftsman, he works alone finishing one, or sometimes 2 pairs per day, while organically tanning his own leathers using acacia and encino oak tree bark.
The “Cien Clavos” or “Hundred Nails” design is so called because of the many nails used in the sole. The character of the “Cien Clavos” isn’t trend driven so you’ll never grow tired of this unique Huarache design. The Huarache upper unlike that of other footwear will only get better with age, as the vegetable tanned full grain leather slowly forms to your foot shape and gains a rich golden honey patina over time.
Made in the traditional Huarache way, the “Cien Clavos” is entirely hand cut without cutting dies. The upper is lined using a pedal powered leather sewing machine, after which it is nailed to a wooden mesquite last where it is hand woven into the insole using only a single strip of leather cut from the center of the hide. A continuous leather strip that is cut and skived freehand and yet with incredible precision from years of practice. The sole is made from a reclaimed truck tire which José Martínez thins down, cuts and washes before nailing to the woven Huarache upper (the nails provide a very strong hold so no glue is used to join the sole). Unlike other Huaraches, the “Cien Clavos” has a closed heel which was originally used for horse riding, and the vamp partially covers the toes which makes the Huaraches an interesting shoe/sandal hybrid.
The “Cien Clavos” Huarache is a signature Martínez design and is made in very limited quantities. You will not find market or souvenir huaraches of a comparable quality and design. Nor will you likely find footwear crafted by the same artisan who also tans their own leather anywhere in the world.
José Martínez leather lines all his Huaraches with a thinner and softer leather using a traditional pedal powered sewing machine. In fact none of his Huaraches are made using any electrical tools. The only use for electricity is to power the radio. What’s more, given all the natural light that fills the “Taller” workshop during the working hours even the lights are hardly ever turned on, making the carbon footprint from his business minimal.
Introducing Señor José Martínez the Master Huarachero and maker of the one of a kind “Cien Clavos” Huaraches.

Reblogged this on 74 FOOTWEAR DESIGN CONSULTING and commented:
As a footwear designer Mexican Huarache Footwear has long fascinated me. In many ways Huaraches embody much of my evolving design perspectives and the many progressive design topics that I’ve explored on this blog.
I’m captivated by the two juxtaposing characteristics of woven Huaraches.
1. The generative algorithmic technical nature of Huaraches weaving. A unique construction method where altering a single weave can lead to a new upper design. Huaraches that are constructed from a single strip of leather akin to the latest additive manufacturing technologies, except that Huaraches cannot be machine made.
2. The human, handcrafted nature of Huaraches which brings a natural dimension to an increasingly industrial, or synthetic consumer footwear experience.
Introducing úkata selling the finest Huaraches to promote and sustain this incredible woven footwear craft and tradition.
Reblogged is the first úkata style on offer. In limited quantities the úkata “Cien Clavos” by Huaraches Martinez.

I really like this design. Unfortunately, it is impossible to order the proper size on the ukata site because the sizes are not visible in the options. You might want to modify your description to make the sizes visible.
Hi Shannon, thank you for your tip. If you visit the page (CLICK HERE) underneath the price in the top right is a button titled “Choose an option…” If you click on “Choose an option…” all the available sizes should appear. If your size is not available let me know and I will ask to get a pair made for you. Thanks for looking.
I would really like to buy a pair of 12 US Pihuamos, are you planning to sell that kind of huaraches soon? Congratulations on your new store
Thank you Benjamin. You have been following Huarache Blog for many years and have provide much useful and good support. In fact you were the first person who understood the potential of selling Huaraches. To answer your question Huarache sizing on future sales will depend much on what sizes are ordered the most and which are requested. I will see if the Don Lupe the Pihuamo Huarachero has a US 12 last available. Would you prefer a thicker or thinner leather Pihuamo Huarache (finito o de trabajo)?
I have been searching for the pihuamo sandels for the ladt 30 years. We use to get the at shoe town when i was in school bit prices have gone up. I would love a pair od these shoes again pleade help me out with this. Thank
kellie newman
Dear Kellie, I promise you never bought any Huaraches as high quality as the ones I’ve been selling these last 4 years. Sr. Martinez tans his own leather over a period of 3 months for each hide with tree bark and water. He also adds softer veal lining. All his huaraches are completely hand made without using cutting dies. My objective was to sell only the very best Huaraches, but unfortunately as you mention, prices were probably too high even though postage from Mexico was included. Worth considering is that on the other end of the spectrum cheap Huaraches also keep the Artisans very poor. Despite their sometimes rustic nature, Huaraches are very labor intensive and take hours, just to make one pair.
I will stop selling Huaraches next week, but you can no doubt find other Pihuamo huaraches on Google. I can also suggest the “Huarache Directory” where you may be able to make a direct order with a Huarache Artisan who is listed.

Dear Tammy, unfortunately Jose Martinez who made the Cien Clavos passed away last year. Its was a massive loss, also because there is no one to continue from him. I think there are some Cien Clavos still for sale on line if you check my recent posts Huarache Blog in Facebook. Markus

Dear Joe, I’m not sure how I can help you. The message that you replied to confirms that Jose Martinez died a few years ago. He no longer makes Huaraches. Best regards, Markus
